Beware of the Gym Rat

I was talking with one of my Dial-A-Trainer - http://www.fitnessandresults.com/dial_a_trainer.php clients today, Larry, who has been working with me for a couple months now.

Since he started my program, he has dropped 10-15 pounds, drastically improved his cardiovascular endurance and has made phenomenal gains with his strength and stamina.  Though he still has about 40 more pounds to lose, he is WELL on his way.

Anyway, we started talking about his strength training routine and I hear this:

“My routine from your book - http://www.fitnessandresults.com/homefitness_book.php
went great yesterday Jim, except one exercise gave me some difficulty.” He said.

“Really…Which one?”  I asked.

“Well, the thing is, this personal trainer at the gym DIDN’T want me to do it.” He said.

“Are you kidding me...Why?” I asked.

“Well…first, he interfered with my workout, telling me the so-called rules and regulations of why I can’t move equipment around because I needed to use one of the stability balls with the exercise.”

“I understand that if I didn’t put it back, he would have a point, but this was only for one lousy exercise…and even so, what business is it of his anyway…this was completely uncalled for.” He continued.

“He then tried to lecture me and say that the exercise I was attempting was TOO difficult for me because he thought I wasn’t coordinated enough.  He said.
(Very disgruntled at this point)

“This guy doesn’t know me from Adam.  Since I don’t have a chiseled physique like him, he essentially thinks I don’t know what I’m doing, and that if I follow the same routine HE does, I’ll get results…Gimme a break.  He said.

“All the guy does is chest, back and arms…”

“From the training in the past couple months, the results I’ve achieved and as you’ve told me…working ONLY the upper-body would be a complete waste of my time.” He said.

“Exactly.” I said

“So, the long and short of it is, the guy made me stay an extra 10-15 minutes longer than I would of liked...but the good news is, I managed to complete the workout.”

“I’m sorry you had to go through that Larry.  It never ceases to amaze me how impersonal gyms are.” I said.

“Yeah, I want to quit, but I’m stuck in this contract for another couple months…Owell.” He said.

Look, if this isn’t enough reason to ditch the gym scene, I don’t know what is.

Instead of having to deal with bully trainers (or gym rats as I like to call them) who  don’t know what they’re talking about AND could care less whether you achieve your fitness/weight loss goals or not…You need to start discovering how you can get the body you want…right from your own home.  For more info, click here – http://www.fitnessandresults.com/homefitness_book.php

Have a good weekend!

Are You a Problem or Solution-Oriented Person?

Anything you do in life requires the implementation of goals.  Goals are your dreams, aspirations, ambitions to be or do whatever it is you want to accomplish in your life.

The beauty of goal setting is that it works in every facet of your life.  Your marriage, health, kids, job...ANYTHING.  Without goals your life is pretty much meaningless.

There are two types of people; people who achieve their goals, or people who find ways why they can’t.

People who achieve their goals are very organized and have a specific plan that will enable them to succeed.  They don’t make excuses or complain why it’s so hard or dwell on problems that may arise.  These types of people are solution-oriented.  They know that the goal will require hard work, but they are determined to achieve the objective at hand.

People who don’t achieve their goals are disorganized and have a generalized plan that will ultimately lead them to fail.  They would rather complain instead of focusing on what they have to do.  These types of people are problem-oriented.  They don’t want to work hard and would rather make excuses why they can’t achieve the goal.

In my opinion, goal setting is the single most important aspect of your fitness plan.  It’s the blueprint, the script, the nucleus, the centerpiece, the focal point of everything that will help you succeed.

When I first started training clients, I was never really serious about goal setting and although I did well, I could have done so much better.

Today, I don’t even consider training a client unless he or she knows exactly what their goals are and are willing to do anything and everything to accomplish them.  I have them make goals that are daily, weekly, monthly and yearly.

Fact is, once I started to clearly define goal setting with clients, my success rate shot through the roof!

Usually, clients would come to me for weight loss and it didn’t matter how much weight they wanted to lose…Once I programmed them to constantly be working toward their goal, the weight would come off so effortlessly; it was like shooting fish in a bucket!

It’s not because I am the best trainer in the world, or because I know of some secret weight-loss formula…not at all.

I know how to teach my clients how to set goals and most importantly how to help them understand that they CAN achieve them, IF they stick to the plan.

Now, let’s go back to the people who achieve their goals and people who don’t.

Which one are you?

There is no reason in the world why you can’t be the person who achieves their goals.

As Henry Ford once said:

“If you think you can or think you can't, you're right.”

Life is nothing but decisions.  You decide to succeed.  You decide to fail.  You decide to be happy.  You decide to be sad.    Even if you make mistakes along the way, it’s your decision to keeping working hard or it’s your decision to give up.  In my opinion, there’s no in-between.  You decide to be a winner or loser.

So let’s say your goal is weight loss, which most of the time it is when it comes to fitness and health. Ask yourself these important questions:

How much weight do I want to lose?

What will happen if I don’t lose this weight?

What will happen if I do?

How will I feel if I lose this weight?

Do I know exactly how I will do it?

Can I achieve it by myself or do I need someone’s help?

What is my time frame for losing it?

What is stopping me from losing this weight?

If you are someone who has set crystal clear goals for themselves, you should be able to answer these questions easily.  If not, you will unfortunately struggle.  Again, it’s YOUR decision.

So, are you ready to make your goals become a reality?  I hope so!  Nothing is stopping you but what’s between your ears.  I’m positive you will make the right decision.  Set goals and achieve them… It’s really pretty simple.  You can do it!

Yours in Total Fitness & Maximum Success,

Jim Coughlin

P.S. Are you making goals for yourself yet?  If not, get moving!

How to Perform the Perfect Squat

When it comes to strength training, the exercise that stands above the rest is - The Squat.  No other exercise has a greater impact on the body’s muscle, metabolism and energy expenditure than this exercise.

The squat is a complete-body movement.  Not only does this exercise target the front and back of the legs (namely, the quads, hamstrings and glutes), but you also work the abdominals, lower back, arms and shoulders...not to mention, the cardio benefits you get as well.

There are many different ways to perform a squat.  You’ve probably been repeatedly told from personal trainers at your local gym or convinced by popular fitness magazines into thinking machine-based squats are the best way to go.

I thought the same thing a while back, until I smartened up and realized through much experience that these devices cause more harm than good, aren’t effective and most importantly, are NOT something you can stick to as a practical lifestyle.  This is also true with ANY gadget/gizmo you find at a gym.

All gyms have the same fancy machines to perform a squat, from the smith machine, to nautilus, to cybex, to free-motion, to life-fitness, the list goes on.  And all of them boast to be different or better than the next.  Yet the funny thing is, each one is identical in their mechanics and have the same basic premise...adjust confusing settings...get into an awkward position...lift...add weight…repeat.

The only difference is how much MORE awkward one is compared to the next.

For example, with the Smith machine, you place a long sliding steel bar over your shoulders/upper back and under your head while positioning your arms behind your torso with your hands gripping the bar.  You then descend until your thighs are parallel to the floor while simultaneously holding the bar under your neck and head then repeat the process over.

There are so many things that compromise your safety with this exercise.

One, it puts a huge strain on the shoulder joints because of the position of your arms.  Two, it aggravates the neck since the bar is essentially resting right below it, even if there is a pad surrounding the bar for cushion, and three, it’s unnatural movement causes you to round your back while descending into the squat position, putting unnecessary pressure on the spine.

Just explaining this exercise is complicated and surprisingly, the smith machine squat is the simplest one to do…don’t get me started on the others.

Not only do machine-based squats affect your safety, they also limit your potential to perform the squat exercise itself.

To perform a successful squat, you start in a standing position with your feet shoulder width and back straight, descend with your legs until your thighs are parallel to the floor…like you’re about to sit on a chair.  You then return to the starting position and repeat.  This is the complete movement or full range of motion to properly execute the exercise.

However, each time I put a client on one of these clumsy contraptions, they don’t like it.  They use improper form, thus limiting their correct range of motion.  This is because they feel out-of-place and do not feel like they have control during the exercise.

When they start the movement, they’re mostly afraid they won’t be able to lift the weight back up when descending.  So instead of going down until their thighs are parallel, they go halfway or sometimes, even less.

Instead of them feeling their muscles being worked, they are more concerned about how uncomfortable they feel and can’t wait for it to be over…quite frankly, I don’t blame them.

This defeats the purpose of the squat and consequently, voids the efficiency of the exercise entirely.  It is also why I very rarely (if at all) use machines in my strength training routines for clients… even if a client is at a gym.

Machine squats not only risk injury and aren’t effective, but as I said earlier, they aren’t something you can incorporate as a regular routine independently.

For instance, you’ll never see someone trying to attempt a squat machine by themselves, unless of course, it’s a greasy bodybuilder, athlete or obsessed gym freak.  And even they are nuts for doing it solo.

This is true with most machines and is exactly why many people who join a gym can’t stay consistent.

They’ve been trained by the ‘so-called trainers’ into thinking machines are the ONLY way to workout.  Yet when the trainers aren’t around, they feel intimidated and forget their routine all together.

This is NOT what strength training is about.

You SHOULD be able to do a squat by yourself no matter what your fitness level and not have to worry about hurting your body in the process.  If you need someone to spot you, you shouldn’t do the exercise at all.

There are exceptions, but still, what’s the point in exercising while at the same time having to fear for your life?

I teach my clients 10 ways to properly perform a squat.  All of my methods are safe, effective, and can be done by practically anyone.

Once they master these particular exercises, I’ll teach them dozens of more advanced ones to do.  But no matter what level they’re at, one thing is certain, my routines DO NOT involve machines.  The ONLY machine that is involved is the most important one – Their Body.

When a client is finished training with me, they have a plethora of routines to do…and most importantly, ones they can stick to – Forever.

Ready…Set…Take ACTION!

I know you’ve been getting a lot of motivational stuff from me lately, but in all my years as a personal trainer, this key component IS the difference between getting results or NOT.

So if you’re sick of reading this type of information, too bad…it’s not for you anyway.

Now, for those of you who want to have a body to die for, energy like a 12-year old, strength like a bear or a life filled with unlimited happiness…Well then, keep on reading because what I’ve got cooked up for you today is something truly special.

I interviewed Deborah Godes, a client who has been a huge success with personal training.  Seriously, if you want a blue print for getting amazing results with your fitness routine…listen very carefully to what Deborah has to say.  If you do, I promise you’ll be successful.

Here is the interview…

JC: What was your experience with fitness and health prior to meeting me?

DG: It was pretty variable. There was a time when I was in good shape but in the past three years, I had not been working out. I had a child and had a hard time finding time for me between working and taking care of my family.

JC: What were your reasons for hiring a personal trainer?

DG: I really was committed to getting back in shape but I was realistic in knowing that I could not do it alone. I wanted someone who would push me that extra 5%. I knew I could work hard on my own but not hard enough and not long enough. If I really wanted to get the results that I was envisioning, I had to be truly committed and put my money where my mouth was.

JC: What kind of results did you expect to achieve with personal training?

DG: While I knew what I wanted to lose (25 - 30 pounds over four months), I did not think it was realistic. If I could have lost 15 pounds in 4 months, that would have been a good accomplishment.

JC: Amazingly, you lost 22 pounds, 22 inches and 10% body fat in little over 2 months…What in the world is going through your head after achieving these kinds of results in such a short period of time?  If you don't mind, can you tell everyone your before and after weight?

DG: You really want me to tell people my weight? Hmm. What the hell. My weight was 161.2 when I started. After my 8-week Sculpt & Strengthen - http://www.fitnessandresults.com/sculpt_and_strengthen.php sessions, I was down to 139.2. To put that in perspective, I went from a size 12 to a size 6 (which I have not worn since high school). To be honest, as I wrote in my note to you, I was flabbergasted, stunned, speechless -- you name it. I did not think that was possible ... but I ALSO felt so wonderful. I felt (and feel) so much more alive, healthy. It is WONDERFUL.

JC: How have your family, friends and co-workers responded to your transformation?

DG: Shock, utter shock. They have been very supportive (as you would expect) but every week, people just look at me and shake their heads as they see me pulling up my pants that are falling off of me. (I have not replenished my wardrobe quite yet).

JC: What do you feel are the most important tips you have learned during your training?

DG: If you are committed enough, anything is possible. But it has to be YOUR commitment. You have to be doing this because YOU want it and not because your spouse, significant other or family members want it. If you do not have the right reasons driving you, you are not going to get the results that you could. Also, do not worry about what anyone else can do. You may not be able to do a lot of a particular exercise when you start but as long as you try hard, that is all that matters. For example, during my first week, I did sit-ups for you and I was able to do 4. (Yes, as in, 1 .. 2 .. 3 .. 4). It may be pathetic for someone else but I used every ounce in my body to do even 4. Over time, you will make improvement if you really push yourself.

JC: How has nutrition played a role in your success?

DG: Huge. The reason I lost this weight (I think) is because I made transformation on three levels: (1) I went from working out 0 times a week to 10 times a week (cardio 7 days a week and 3 sessions with you); (2) I was drinking no water before and I am now drinking 65 - 80 ounces per week; and (3) I went from eating okay (but not great) most of the time to being VERY conscientious of my eating. I have my "free day" on Sunday but other than that, I am very strict.

JC: What is your advice for people who can't get motivated to exercise and have lost hope with their bodies?

DG: Do not lose hope. I know it is easy to say that from me but it is true. It is not going to be easy -- I am not going to lie to you but seriously, I am proof that if you make the full 100% commitment, ANYTHING and I do mean ANYTHING is possible.

JC: I know you have done hundreds of exercises while training, so it's probably difficult to pick just one…Though generally speaking, which one did you find the most challenging?   Which one are you most proud of?

DG: That is not a challenging question. The hardest one for me has been the jumping squats with the 5 pounds weights on each ankle. As you know because you seem me struggle, it is SO bleeping hard but I still persevere and do it every session. As for the one that I am most proud of, it is definitely a tie. First, I am just stunned by the change in my abdominal strength -- I had NO muscles (and that is an understatement) at the beginning, being able to do only 4 sit-ups. But now, I can do 20 sit-ups on a ball while throwing and catching a 12 pound weight. (It is insane). Second, I am shocked (and my husband is) about my improvement in push-ups. It is staggering.

JC: I've trained hundreds of people and your work ethic is best I have ever encountered.   What's your secret for pushing yourself harder each session?

DG: I am not sure that I have a secret. I just have the attitude of either go all the way or go home. Why do a half-a** job? It is a waste of my time and a waste of yours. I also think that after getting results the first week (which were very good), I got hooked and addicted. I liked losing the weight which made me push myself harder.

JC: After your fitness training with me is over, what are your goals to STAY in tip-top shape and workout independently for the future?

DG: You mean my training with you is not perpetual? Just kidding. I am going to stick to my new nutrition regimen and really stay in maintenance mode -- do cardio 4 - 5 times a week and do weights 2 - 3 times a week. My husband will be a big help with that -- he is so supportive.

I hope you enjoyed that…I sure as hell did!

The Truth About Fitness Boot Camps

In the past couple years, I’ve noticed how fitness boot camps have become extremely popular in the fitness industry.  While I have never been a fan of this type of training, I can see why there are a number of reasons both the client and trainer can benefit.

For the client, they’re ridiculously cheap.  A fitness enthusiast can shell out as little as 10-20 bucks an hour and still get a decent workout.

They’re also very motivational.  Some people despise working out alone and prefer to work out with a large group of people.  This environment makes them feel competitive and pushes them beyond what they can normally do by themselves.

For the trainer, boot camps are highly lucrative.  There is practically no overhead.  The fitness instructor can have a group of twenty people meet at a local park, perform bodyweight calisthenics and/or cardio drills, and only pay for using the park, which is very minimal at the least.

Also, if a trainer charges 20 bucks an hour per person and there are 20 people…Well, you do the math…that’s $400.00 buckaroos an hour!  Not a bad deal.

Despite all this, there’s one huge detail I should mention…

Fitness Boot Camps Do Not Work.

That’s right, they won’t get you results…or not the kind of results regular one-on-one personal training will give you.

Boot camps are good workouts for sure, they’ll raise your heart rate, they’ll assist in burning some calories and help you break a sweat, they may even get you motivated, BUT don’t expect your body to look much different after a month or more from this type of training.

Many personal training companies (not mine) won’t divulge this kind of information since boot camps make up a good percentage of their clientele.

Most fitness companies market boot camps as the best thing since sliced bread and sometimes even compare it to regular personal training...saying stuff like:

“Lose fat, build muscle and drop weight fast with highly-motivational Fitness Boot Camps that are a fraction of the cost of a personal trainer and can easily be done at your local park”

Blah…Blah…Blah…

Look, let’s be perfectly clear.  There is a HUGE difference between one-on-one personal training and boot camps. I assure you, they’re NOT the same thing!  Not even close.  There’s a reason one-on-one personal training is relatively expensive…it gets you the best results possible.  Period.

With boot camps, you are training with 20 individuals at the same time.  This means you have 20 different people with different strength, endurance and health backgrounds working out together.  There’s no way in h*ll ONE trainer can gauge each person’s fitness level individually.  It’s not possible.

All the fitness instructor can do is shout at the top of his or her lungs and instruct everyone with the same generic exercise routines over and over…usually simple bodyweight calisthenics such as push-ups, squats, lunges and sit-ups that are not monitored for correct form and proper intensity.

When you supplement boot camps for your strength training; you don’t challenge the body’s muscles.  You’re not going to force your body to change, hence your body will EASILY adapt and cause you to not see results.

You’re much better off saving your time and money and doing some type of cardio exercise by yourself such as walking, jogging, running or working out on your elliptical, stairmaster or treadmill.

The reason I say this is because that’s essentially what boot camps are… aerobic conditioning.  Don’t be fooled into believing they aren’t.

Now, I understand that some people may get irritated by hearing this since they may be currently participating in a boot camp or they have had a good experience with one in the past.

No problem with me…after all, boot camps promote fitness, get you motivated and up and off your arse, so there’s something to be said there.

But if you’re looking to TRANSFORM your body and get the best results with your fitness program, forget the boot camp and invest in hiring a qualified personal trainer for one-on-one personal training…it is definitely your best bet.  Click here if you are interested – http://www.fitnessandresults.com/getting_started.php

Better yet, if you’re strapped for dough, I’ve got 90 convenient strength training exercises that don’t place you in a cold arse park at 6:00 in the morning.  These kick-butt routines can be performed in the comfort and privacy of your own home and are the SAME ones I have used to helped hun-dreds of my clients get super-fit FAST.  If you’re curious, click here – http://www.fitnessandresults.com/homefitness_book.php

Well, that’s all for now, until next time train hard and train smart.

I'm All About YOUR Success

I was talking with a client this morning by the name of Nancy.  She is also a subscriber of my FREE Success Tips newsletter.

She got my “Speechless” email the other day and kept mentioning how amazed she was at Deborah’s results.  Nancy’s energy was awesome.  She was so impressed at what Deb had accomplished.  She even said “Deborah is my role model…I want to do precisely what she does!”

The enthusiasm Nancy expressed from Deborah’s testimonial was EXACTLY the response I was looking for from people.  I wanted Deborah’s story to uplift people and inspire them to do the same.

Funny thing is, after I send out the speechless email, a large number of people unsubscribed.

Hmmm…I wonder why?

Simple.  These individuals don’t want to hear about Deborah’s success because they’re not successful themselves.  Her success brings out their insecurities.

Instead of having a positive response like Nancy…these people would rather get agitated and show disdain.  Instead of trying to find a solution to their problem and want to improve, they would rather bury their heads in the sand.

This is precisely what’s wrong with America today.  People want somethin for nuthin.

Once they realize ‘SUCCESS’ takes hard work, they avoid it like the plague...

"Who needs hard work?"

“I would much rather take a pill, get surgery or be lazy and complain why I’m out of shape.  That's easier."

"Instead of embracing success, I’d much rather run away from it.”

Understand that I got where I am today through HARD WORK.
All my clients have achieved fitness success through HARD WORK.

Nothing in life is just handed to you.  You gotta go get it!

Every one of you reading this right now has the potential to do GREAT THINGS.  Any of you can accomplish the kind of results Deborah experienced, but only if you find the courage and desire within you to make it happen.

Understand that I’m all about your success…plain and simple.  But, if you don’t want to hear that success takes hard work…I CAN'T help you.

Speechless

I have worked with hundreds of clients; all of which for the most part, have been very successful.  In fact, if I had to measure my success rate, I would say that it’s pretty close to 90-100 percent.

All of these of individuals have made great strides toward their fitness goals and have changed their lives for the better…BUT there are only a handful of people I have helped in my career who are truly special.

These people are my heroes.  Their enthusiasm is so great; you can’t help but be totally inspired.  Their desire to be the best they can be is nothing short of astonishing.

These folks GET IT.

They do exactly what I tell them to do…and for this, achieve a fitness level they’ve always envisioned!  They discover the magic of fitness and health. They find out what it really means…a total Mind and Body Transformation!

A person who epitomizes these qualities is Deborah Godes.

I can say without any doubt whatsoever that Deborah is the hardest working client I have EVER trained…Period.  Deborah is the REAL DEAL.

She doesn’t complain and make excuses.
She doesn’t do things half-arse.
She doesn’t focus on the negative or what she can’t do.

She does one thing and one thing only…Shuts up and trains her friggin butt off!
Her determination is relentless!

We just finished her 24th Sculpt & Strengthen session - http://www.fitnessandresults.com/sculpt_and_strengthen.php and the results she achieved in a little over 2 month’s time were nothing short of amazing!

This is no exaggeration either.

I have never helped someone get fit FASTER than Deborah!  And before you take my word for it, I’ll let Deborah tell you in her own words.

The title of her email is “Speechless”…

Jim,

So, I am sitting here writing this testimonial and to be honest, I am still in complete shock. The transformation of my body over the last 8+ weeks is truly astonishing.  I lost 22 pounds, 22 total inches, dropped 10 percent body fat and gained 10 pounds of muscle!!!!

I think that the most important thing that I have learned over the past weeks is that those infomercials and gadgets are just gimmicks. All you really need is to make a commitment, a true 100% commitment to getting back in shape and you can make it happen. (Oh yeah, a kick-ass, rock star trainer helps as well). I changed all three critical facets of my life -- my exercise routine, my eating habits and my drinking habits. I now work out 10 times a week, eat sensibly every day (except on my free day (I LOVE my free day)) and drink 65-80 ounces of water a day. I have busted my butt, have been singular in my focus and worked harder than I ever thought was humanly possible. But, I am proof that you can do it!!

I wish I could say more than just thank you because that does not seem to be enough. But, truly, thank you!! You are an amazing personal trainer and I am so lucky that we were able to connect and help me to get to where I am now.

See you Wednesday!!

Cheers,
Deb

P.S. My arms are so sore.

J.C. Deb…Training you has been one of the best experiences in my career...no B.S.  You truly are a shining star and the results you achieved unequivocally prove that fact!  I'm so proud of you and I look forward to helping you get into EVEN better shape...if that's possible!

See you Wednesday!

How BAD Do You Want It?

When it comes to exercise, people usually do the bare minimum. Many come to the conclusion that the fact they're exercising is good enough and they're content with being mediocre.

The same goes for how people see themselves.

Many men and women limit their potential and rationalize why they can't have the body they once had or they can't reach the fitness level they truly desire.

The usual phrases are uttered again and again...

"I'm older, so my metabolism has become slower."
"I've had children, so I can't get rid of fat in certain areas of my body."
"I have more responsibilities, so I don't have time to exercise."
"I don't have the motivation and self-discipline I used to."
"I have poor genetics and my body doesn't respond to working out."

The list goes on and on and if you're waiting for me to tell you these are legitimate reasons you CAN'T get into kick arse shape...you might as well keep waiting.

Fact is, these aren't reasons...they're e-x-c-u-s-e-s. And if I had penny for every time I heard one of them, I'd be richer than Donald Trump.

Look, it all comes down to this...

"How BAD do you want to get into the best shape of your life?"

A simple and direct question I know, but can YOU give me a direct answer?

To build the body of your dreams, you can't BS yourself. You can't be "kinda serious" or "unsure" or "on the fence" about achieving the fitness goals you really want. You can't keep focusing on the problem. You've got to take ACTION and find the right solution of what will work to unlock your true potential.

If you're truly committed to becoming the person you've always envisioned, you've got to go all-out. You've got to turn the faucets on full-blast. You've got to have every fiber of your being saying "YES! I'm ready to get super-fit and live life to the fullest!

You've got to get excited! Yes, excited.

If you're not enthusiastic or see exercise as a chore, you can't for a second expect to get into amazing shape.

Fitness and health IS a mind and body connection. You can't have one or the other; you've got to have BOTH to be successful.

To achieve a fitness level you've always imagined you MUST have laser focus. You must have the desire, the will and determination to DO whatever it takes!

Why be average when you could be outstanding?
Why be ordinary when you could be extraordinary?
Why be a mouse when you could be a lion?
Why be pitied when you could be envied?
